Maria's opinion on TikTok

Updated: Aug 23, 2021

Whether you're looking for cute dances, funny skits and lip-syncs or even educational videos, cooking advice, economic management, TikTok has it all. This worldwide phenomenon evolved so much from it's starting point of a flimsy dancing app and has become one of the leading global media sources. Used mostly by youngsters, it has significantly influenced the opinions and viewpoints of the consumers group. In addition to the entertainment part of the app, in the past few years TikTok has tackled some pretty important topics concerning ecology, racism, LGBTQ+ rights, Covid-19 pandemic etc. In my case, the information that I have received regarding these topics has been well researched and supported by evidence, which is more than we have gotten from TV houses and networks. It gives us a personal insight, not manipulated and shaped to governments requests as is with most media networks.

People on this app are passionate about problems in their community, city, country, and they advocate for them reaching through younger audiences who will have influence in constructing our future. TikTok is viewed as an app for kids, a silly thing for when you're bored, and I agree with that statement. I even find myself mindlessly scrolling through it looking at funny nothings, but that is not it's only side. It's education, it's influence, it's communication and connection, and it is definitely of great importance.
